Pleached Trees / Screening
Pleached Trees
Pleached trees are trees normally with a area of clear stem which have been shaped, espalier pruned or fanned out normally on a framework or wire runs to create a panel or architectural feature for both screening or ornamental purposes.
Screening uses
The use of the pruning technique for trees can be ideal for screening purposes as this is commonly known as a hedge on stilts. It can be the perfect solution if you have unsightly views above your fence or wall height. One of the reasons they are becoming more popular in town gardens is that they can create a solid dense covering of foliage at the height you desire without taking up valuable garden space. If it is privacy you crave then again these can be the perfect solution. See image below for examples of trees used for screening and privacy.
Trees supplied for this type of use are normally just branches fanned out across a framework that when trimmed over time will create a solid screen. This requires less time and skill and should reflect in the price. when ordering it is always best to specify what the desired feature is.

Ornamental uses
Pleached Trees have been used for many years in both classic and contemporary design. The use of this pruning art in Holland is where I have gained my inspiration for use in design over the years. I do feel that the Dutch really know how to work with nature and prune trees in such a way that can both add outstanding ornamental beauty and achieve exceptional practical solutions in soften urban areas without the trees becoming a problem in the future.
Espalier Pruned Pleached Trees can create outstanding architectural features. It is in this form that I first found my passion for this tree pruning technique. The horizontal lines that come with the correct training and pruning can create features that will truly take you breath away the picture below shows how an outstanding vista can be created when using this skilled training and pruning method. Trees supply for this type feature are not the trees seen on many sites on the web. This form of pleaching requires a huge amount of skill and will reflect in the price. Please see image of freshly espaliered pruned trees ready for planting.

For guidance in the process of creating a feature using the technique mentioned please see the planting and care of Pleached Trees page. This page will follow the progress a feature in a garden in Northumberland that we have been working on. When finished it will have a formal pond with a row of trees either side .I will update this page from time to time to show the process of creating the feature.

Supply
We source trees from all over Europe making sure we get the best quality at the best prices. Having discussed your specific requirements we can give you a detailed quotation. This will usually contain a number of suitable options giving the information you have supplied us with. We will also normally have some visual examples for you.
We appreciate that for many clients purchasing large trees is not a familiar process and for large enough orders we can negotiate a site assessment visit. and we can also price for the planting of the trees.
We do not normally deal with orders for less then ten trees at a time as transport costs under this number would not make it viable for us to fulfill.
