Cloud Trees

Cloud trees are a Japanese art of pruning a plant in cloud formations.

This oriental method of pruning trees puts emphasis on the plant's form and branch structure. The stems provide as much attention to the eye in cloud pruning as the foliage. These superb and very unusual trees are ideal if you are looking for something out of the ordinary. They are ideal to create a very special focal point within the garden.

A selection of trees and shrubs can be used to create this art with the plants been pruned to reveal the stems, the remaining foliage is then sculpted into rounded shapes or clouds. This method of pruning should not be confused with bonsai, where plants are grown in pots and trained from a young age. But you could be forgiven for thinking this as the style can make them look very much like “big bonsai”.

Cloud Trees

Ilex Crenata "Kinme” or Japanese holly is ideal for this style of pruning as this variety is very slow growing. These beautifully shaped graceful works of art are not commonly found in the UK. They are native and normally styled in Japan, Taiwan and East China and then mostly imported via Italy.

The larger trees, can take many, many years to create, but are surprisingly easy to look after. They can be grown in large containers or planted directly into well prepared well drained soil. They can be planted in full sun or partial shade.

Plants available as cloud pruned specimens include Ilex Crenata, (Japanese holly), Buxus (box), Taxus (yew) and Pinus (pine).
